If you can deal with the quirky electronics, there is no better 12V compressor fridge/freezer on the market
This my second C15 (1st came with a cracked housing,UPS's fault not Alpicool). I have about 2 months of testing to base this review on. The bottom line is this, if you can deal with the quirky electronics, there is no better compressor fridge/freeze at this price point. This is not a "set it and forget it" unit. You have take time to play with the settings, and understand the thermostat issues. I'll try to touch on some points that frequently come up below:
Is the temperature display accurate?: NO, it's close when using as a fridge, but way off when using as a freezer. But, this does mean it won't hold a steady temp. Each unit seems to have it's own tolerance. For example if I set my C15 to -20 F it holds a temp of about -3 F.
Can it freeze?: Absolutely, I've gotten the box to -6
Can I change the display to F?: Yes, and there a bunch of other hidden settings.
Does the unit smell?: As other reviewers have noted, yes. There is a plastic / tobacco kind of smell during initial use. This goes away eventually.
Did your compressor lock up?: Yes, I had an instance where the compressor locked. Even after powering the unit down the compressor was still running. I had to pull the power cord. This occurred during a day of thunderstorms, it's possible this was due to the power cutting in and out.
How is it as an unpowered cooler?: Not bad, with water bottles filling the box chilled to 31 F, unplugged the box rose to 37 F over 10 hours. Tests with frozen water stuff in a box cooled to 0F were not very successful.
