Very Well Crafted, I Recommend !
I purchased this product to keep my dog warm in the winter months. Being from the Mid Atlantic region, snow and cold weather is inherent. When I received the product, I noted its sturdy construction. It may seem pricey but it is well made. After opening the box, I laid it on the counter and plugged it in. I made sure the thermostat was on the off position and began to turn it on. I heard the thermostat click and the unit turned on and quickly began to heat up. A couple minutes of that new oily type smell as it heated up but it quickly dissipated.
The unit does get warm to the touch and I mean warm. The top and front are warm/hot and the bottom is cool to the touch. I ran it for about 1 hour on my counter with the thermostat on high. By the way the thermostat basically controls just the on or off setting. When it is on........it is on......no half heat or 30%. On or off. It does have a built in temp control built into the thermostat so that when on low it will not turn on until temps dip low and the high setting will make the unit turn on at a higher external temp.
After the burn in, I plugged the unit into a P400 Kill-a-Watt device to review the power draw. I was shocked to see a very minimal power consumption. Very nice perk for the buyer. The unit draws 1.3 amps when on. Considering your iPad charges at 2.1 amps and your Kuerig coffee maker draws almost 12 amps, this was a nice surprise.
I installed the unit quite easily. I feel good about my dog being able to weather the winter conditions with the hound heater installed in her dog house. The temp is supposed to dip into the 20's tomorrow evening so I will be closely monitoring the unit. I will provide updates as I test the outside temp vs the inside dog house temp.
As a side note, I did insulate the walls of the dog house with 1 1/2" foam board. I did not insulate the ceiling but may do so as I monitor the performance. Same goes for the entry door.
Update: The unit has been in operation 1 week now and I have the following notations: I placed the thermostat on "medium". The overnite temperature dipped to 38 and the house was a cool 45. I thought this was somewhat cool so I raised the thermostat between "medium" and "High". The other nite the temp was again 38 and house was 54. This morning the temp outside was 28 and the house was 47. I don't think the house can be much warmer without some additional insulation such as the insulating the ceiling and putting a dog door at the entrance. I purchased an infared temperature gauge ( I also have a wireless thermometer for inside the dog house that helps me monitor the inside temp) to shoot the Hound Heater temp. When it is on the unit is a smoking 175 degrees !
