Good buy! Tips and tricks
I’m super happy with it, now that I have dialed it in. Here are some tips:
- The spool of wire, components, and the instructions are INSIDE the welder. I was dumbfounded at first!
- Don’t let the wire unravel. Be super careful feeding it or you’ll have to toss it. It’s like a giant spring that will unravel in a second.
- the lowest setting to the highest settings are: min one, min two, max one, max two. (I figure)
- if your house circuit is 15 amps, you may start to have a tripped breaker after the lowest setting (min one). Min one didn’t trip at all for me. I would recommend getting a 25 foot 12 gauge extension cord and use an outlet from the kitchen. Most outlets are 20 amps since they power appliances. They don’t recommend 50 foot cord, but you may get a way with it.
- I set the speed of the wire at different speeds depending upon my power intensity levels. But I like to use Max One at 4 speed.
- there is a spring enclosed to provide tension for the reel of wire. This wasn’t clear in the instructions. This spring provides tension to keep the reel of wire from unraveling. If your wire doesn’t feed right, you’ll never lay a nice bead.
- you can take the tip off of the welder since this doesn’t use gas. It will also help you see better.
- get a new mask for sure!! I got an auto darkening one for $30. The one they send you is a flat piece of plastic and just a dark piece of glass. You can’t see anything until there are sparks. It’s barebones prehistoric
- if you don’t have it, I would recommend: extra .30 tips ($5), 2 pounds of .30 wire ($20), welding gloves $10), a good helmet ($30), a 12 gauge extension cord that is 25 feet long ($25)
- you can wear an old leather jacket and leather shoes. I wore running shoes and it burned through the top and through my sock. I’ve got a got a reminder to dress appropriately!
Good luck and happy welding!
