I just wanted to pass on something from my podiatrist: Pull some cotton from a q-tip. Lift the impinging nail with a toothpick, nail file (or whatever). Shove the cotton under. This provided instant relief, allows the skin under to heal, and the nail to (perhaps) grow out normally, and (perhaps) avoid surgery. Then, don't cut the nail too short in the future. Instinct is to cut away the nail that is digging into the skin and hurting, but it's important to let it grow out.
