Apartment living game changer
I love this machine! I have been renting for about 20 years, I move every 1-2 years for work. This means constantly dealing with a different laundry situation everywhere. Hauling it up/down stairs, using machines that are in terrible shape, paying for laundromats, or just doing it all myself in the bathtub.
I got this B&D washing machine after moving into (another) 3rd floor walkup with laundry machines in the basement. I finally hit my limit and decided that I can't be hauling heavy laundry up all those stairs anymore. After doing research online into brands and types of portable washers, I went with this one based on positive reviews and because it seemed sturdier and better quality than some of the other cheaper machines out there.
Basically this washing machine is just like a regular washing machine except that it's smaller and uses the sink as a hookup. It has different cycles (I love the 19 min 'rapid' cycle!), it spins everything at the end so they will hang dry quicker than when I handwash things myself. It says you should only use cold water, this has been fine for getting my things clean. You could easily use warm/hot water instead but the instructions say that it can degrade the machine parts so I haven't bothered with it.
It is pretty heavy. The wheels made it easy to maneuver around once it was inside my apartment, but when the box was delivered I had to haul it up a bunch of stairs by myself. I had thought based on other reviews that it would be easier to physically carry around- but realized later they meant that the wheels help you move it, which is true but it is a pretty heavy appliance that arrives in a big box if you will be carrying it upstairs on your own.
I haven't had any problems with leaks at all. And based on how the machine is set up, I don't really see how it could leak, it really is just a smaller version of a regular washing machine. BUT, you do need to be sure you have the hose securely screwed into the sink faucet. For example, once when I was using it, the hose had popped off the sink (totally my fault, hadn't figured out yet exactly how to connect it), so water was just running into the sink for a few minutes before I figured out what was going on. And you do need to have a sink that drains well. If your sink is clogged or the drain is really slow, your sink could overflow while the washing machine is draining.
I waited until I had the washing machine for about a month to write a review, just to be sure I've really tested it out and I LOVE THIS MACHINE! I no longer dread doing laundry. It's a simple weekend task, I do a couple loads and then hang it all up to dry. I live in a humid climate so drying takes a day or so. It is still a major improvement after years of renting without a washing machine in my home.
When you get the machine, there is this plastic panel and 2 screws so that you can attach the panel to the bottom of the machine. I could never figure out where the screws went, the instructions weren't very helpful. So I just slid the panel onto the bottom of the machine without the screws, it didn't seem crucial to the functioning of the machine itself. So far I haven't noticed any problems.
