As smooth and clean as you'd ever want. I just came across one of my dad's Cross pens - he got this one about 40 years ago and the last ink refill would've been in 1983 or '84. A bit dry and scratchy in this desert climate, as you'd expect. Maybe better than you'd expect, since most ballpoint pens would completely have dried out in 30 years! But with a fresh refill, it's a brand new pen again. My dad died in 1984, shortly after completing his MBA. As it happens, I'm working on my doctoral dissertation. For the price of this refill pack, I'm able to use his old pen. It doesn't sound like much, but I feel connected to him again. When the research or writing is going nowhere and I pick up the pen to make a note, I'm re-inspired. I remember him in his office, taking a moment to try to help me with my junior high algebra homework with this same pen. So maybe this pen will become a small family heirloom and my daughter or even granddaughter will use this same pen down the road, and be encouraged and inspired by it. I hope so.
