Classic TV movie receives a very nice Blu-Ray.
“The Night Strangler” was the sequel to the very popular TV movie “The Night Stalker” featuring a marvelous performance by the late Darren McGavin as reporter Carl Kolchak who solves a string of supernatural murders this time in Seattle. After losing his job in Las Vegas, Simon Vincenzo (Simon Oakland) hires Kolchak again because he knows he’s a terrific reporter but, as with last time, he finds he’ll need antacids to deal with all the trouble that Kolchak runs into with the police. This time a series of murders occurs every 21 years going back to 1889. Kolchak suspects something is living in the bowels of old Seattle.
The Blu-Ray looks marvelous using a 4K restoration of the film. Colors pop and derail is quite nice. The mono soundtrack sounds quite good.
The special features include a commentary by Tim Lucas. There’s also interview with composer Bob Colbert and a vintage interview (for the original DVD) with Dan Curtis discussing the making of the film.
The first run comes with a booklet with an essay discussing the making of the film along with background on its impact.
I’d suggest getting this while you can as Disney elected to not renew the licensing agreement for the Blu-Ray (I hate Disney). Unless they plan a 4K (very unlikely) this will be your last chance to get this. Note that the version here is the 9- minute version created for theatrical run in Europe Oit’s about 16 minutes longer than the original TV version).
