CHERRY flavor offers a good option for folks on Dialysis
I have a family member who is in ESRD (kidney failure/dialysis) and he has to supplement protein because of the dialysis. The care center gave him Liquacel Concentrated Liquid Protein Packets Peach Mango (also available on Amazon). Long story short, nasty taste/upset stomach (probably from the arginine in it) left him seeking alternatives.
We were purchasing the Atkins LIFT protein drinks locally, but when the store discontinued this item, I found the Protein2o and ordered the MIXED VARIETY for him from Amazon.
Hands down, he LOVES the coconut!
We couldn’t find the nutritional facts for potassium & phosphorus - which are a big No/No for folks on dialysis - so, I wrote the company to inquire about them. They replied within 24 hours by sending me a pdf including labeling for all their products (5 stars for SUPER customer service!)
I have condensed the nutrition facts in the photo posted with my review.
The company did reply the cherry flavor might be suitable for our needs, with only 10 mg potassium and 13 mg of phosphorus, so we will order the CHERRY and give it a try. Overall, the taste of each flavor in the mixed variety is slightly sweet, but “nice on ice” or just add a little water to it.
Overall, I gave Protein2o 5 stars for excellent taste & customer service, 3 stars for overall higher sodium & phosphorus content (phosphorus can leech calcium from your bones). I would LOVE to see a switch from sucralose to stevia (have not found ANY comparable drinks that use stevia yet). Overall Rating: 4 stars.
While this drink was not specifically designed for dialysis patients, the CHERRY flavor does offer hope of a more pleasant tasting option than other drinks. Protein2o is also one of the least expensive protein drink options of its type on Amazon.
...at the time of this review:
Protein2o - 12 bottles - $24
Optimum Nutrition - 12 bottles - $34
Atkins Lift - 12 bottles - $33
Atkins Lift - 12 packets - $28
LiquaCel - 30 packets - $43
UPDATE - Customer Service confirmed the potassium on these labels should read MG (milligrams) and not G (grams) and will be updating them!
UPDATE - I also received a response from customer service saying -
"you will be happy to hear that we are actually launching a line of naturally-sweetened Protein2o flavors (3 flavors) that are sweetened with a blend of Stevia and pure cane sugar. We plan to launch these new flavors in the coming 2-3 months."
YAHOOooooooo!!! Okay... I see a five star rating for that product coming up on the horizon... lol! :)
