All you need to know summarizing good and bad reviews
Lets not get too serious here, this is a wood splitting wedge. I laugh when I see 1 star reviews. It isn't a magical wand that will save you from buying a $1000 or more wood splitter. Quality in the market ranges from Harbor Freight to higher grade like this Estwing wedge. For example, the diamond pointed wedge from Harbor Freight will for surely crack, I have cracked 2 in 5 years. Those are good for certain splits because of the point but it wont last forever and you can grind those down to a wedge which will also crack if you split often. Something like this one forged out of a high grade of soft steel will last many seasons. Thats all there is to quality, a better grade steel will take more hits before it cracks.
Some people say this "bounces". All wedges will bounce in poorly seasoned wood and some species of wood just resist being split. If you want to stop bouncing or at least reduce it put this on a disc sander and sharpen the end to a razor edge. You can also use a file if you dont have a disc sander. Only takes 5 seconds on a sander.
The wings that greatly increase the spreading at a certain depth also work better in seasoned wood. Basically you may need 2 or 3 wedges when you split large rounds. When I'm doing rounds over 24 inches I'll find the weakest spot or a natural crack and start. I'll watch the direction the crack naturally goes and sink a second one.
It is absurd to give a wedge one star. People who give a wedge one star should have their muscles reviewed on Amazon.
