Please read if you're replacing a filter that has become warped and is snagging clothes!
This is the second time I'm replacing the lint filter for my LG dryer. The original filter became warped with age, I assumed, and it began grabbing strappy clothes and destroying them when the dryer ran. I went to LG's website to purchase a replacement, only to discover that many other customers were having the same issue, and that LG didn't have any apparent plans to fix what appeared to be a defective part. I ended up purchasing a non-LG replacement part for a fraction of the cost, and it served me well for several months before it too became warped and snagged strappy clothes during dry cycles. I felt it was a waste of money to continue buying a part that was just going to warp, and I didn't like the idea of more clothes getting ruined, but buying a new dryer didn't quite seem like the answer either. I looked on Amazon to see if I could find a cheap replacement part, and I happened to find something even better: A reason why this continued to happen, and a fix for it!
While scrolling through the reviews for this lint filter, I read through the one posted by AverageJoe on 12/20/16. In his review, he described having the same problem as myself and so many others, with the filter failing to fit snugly in the trap after a while. He discovered that a buildup of lint that the filter didn't catch had collected in the bottom of the trap, making it impossible for the filter to fit properly. Shining the flashlight into my lint trap, I saw that I had the same issue! Inches of lint had become tightly compacted in the bottom. Using a wire coat hanger, my husband managed to get most of the lint out. Since my other filters were truly warped from their time spend in the hot dryer air, I went ahead and ordered this part, and hoped for the best. Sure enough, the new filter arrived, and without a bunch of lint filling up the bottom of the trap, this new filter fits perfectly. The mesh on this filter is super-fine, and catches so much more than the two previous filters. I'm also checking the bottom of the lint trap every few days so that I can grab any build-up before it becomes a problem again.
