Great Tactical Pen... Minus the S&W Logo...
When I first bought this pen I wrote the following review: ["I've only had this thing a few days now, but it was love at first sight! What can I say? It's made in the USA by Smith & Wesson... Since when is that not good? After reading FAR too many reviews of "Tactical Pens" and watching WAY too many videos on You Tube about deploying them, I decided on this "pen". Sure you can spend a whole lot more, but why? This pen is not only wonderfully designed (Google "Kubaton") and solidly made of 6061 T-6 aircraft aluminum, but it's built like the "Proverbial Brick S*!?house"! The size and weight are PERFECT, any smaller/longer/lighter/heavier would compromise the device. Yeah, I'd rather that Smith & Wesson didn't emblazon their logo on the pocket clip and the top of the cap... Seriously though, I know who made the pen, do I really need to advertise it to a potential mugger or a LEO (cop) or whatever? Probably NOT! That being said, by the time somebody can read the pen's logo, either he or she has just walked by minding their own business, or they're a bad guy, hell bent on trouble, in which case they've just encountered a deterrent. (NOTE: For more information, be sure to check out the most popular posts by "Tal, Israel") As an aside... I bought this pen as a tactical self defense weapon, not to write my next novel... I really don't care if the cap is hard to remove (that's why it's waterproof)... Or if the pocket clip is REALLY strong (do you really want a weaker clip so that it falls out of you pocket?) Or if the ink is not the best... Bloody hell, I DID NOT buy this pen as the ultimate writing tool. All I care about is that to an observer, it's a pen and it actually writes...] SINCE THEN: On re-reading all the other reviews, I have reconsidered my attitude about the S&W logos printed on the pen. While it really doesn't matter in its function, the S&W logo REALLY could be an issue if a LEO or TSA agent were to take a closer look at this pen... So I decided to modify it. Using xylene I cleaned up the tiny screws that attach the pocket clip and with 400 grit sandpaper I removed the logos on the stainless spring steel pocket clip and the top of the pad printed anodized aluminum cap. In my opinion, it not only looks better, but because of the increased friction on the cap, I think it works better as well! I LOVE Smith & Wesson and by no means mean to diminish their products, but my new "unbranded" version is what I really wanted. I have photos of my "New" Pen which I will try to upload, but if I can't, leave a comment with a way to contact you and I'll be happy to pass them on! With the way things are going in the world today, protecting ourselves (legally) is becoming more and more difficult... outside of years of martial arts training (and even then) this pen could sadly be your last best option! I hope this helps those of you trying to make an intelligent decision on how to defend yourself and your family!
