Great lock....when it works....for a year...
This is a great, phenomenal lock....during the YEAR it worked. I purchased one of these in January 2015. The lock was awesome. It was not a regretted decision which we worried about after reading reviews. (Side note - in the first house, we had changed the batteries, no problems as other people had claimed in reviews said it would die after battery changes.) We moved to a new house March 2016. We carefully removed it from the first door, packaged it back in the original packaging and shipped it in living room boxes to the next house. Installed it on the new door, just as we had before, following directions, no bumps, no jarring, no nothing. It worked for about another 3 months, claimed it needed new batteries. Changed the batteries and all it would do is beep at us. Called Kwikset because supposedly their support is amazing. The customer service agent was really nice and located in the USA and tried to be helpful, but in the end told us it was dead and that something had probably failed inside the lock and that it was really common for this type of lock. Ok, that's fine, you would think the manufacturer would warrant it since it's a common occurrence. It was six months out of the 1-year warranty so they wouldn't do anything about it. Then my stupid self, because the lock had been so great over the past year and a half and I love that I can personally rekey them, bought a second one hoping it was a fluke. Long story short, here I sit a year and 2 months later with a second lock that will lock but will not unlock that just beeps at me after a battery change. DO NOT GET THIS LOCK unless you only have plans for one year of use or less. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. A couple of things in case you were wondering for your purchase or if your lock is doing the same thing: -The lock is not exposed to extreme heat as it gets morning sun from sunrise until about 11 am and then it's in the shade for the rest of the day. (In both houses) -The lock doesn't get exposed to extreme moisture. It's really humid here, but it's never been touched by rain or had anything spilled on it from inside or out. -I have no kids so it has only been used by two 30+ year old adults being used 6 to 10 times a day on average. -We changed the batteries in the past year, so this would have been the second or third battery change for the second lock. -We figure it started to go bad about 3 days ago when we would enter the key code and then the lock would unlock half way, but not enough to open the door. We thought it was just the dogs being really excited and pushing the door from the other side, but further testing proved otherwise and the dogs have never done that before. And we just changed the batteries last week, so we know it's not that. -We always use fresh, brand new Duracell batteries. Straight out of the package.
