Hardware seems good, software breaks it, and their support is terrible.
The resolution when connected to DP is great. Clear picture, good response times, etc. However, there are two absurd issues that are most likely software-related: 1. 4:3 aspect ration doesn’t work at all. It is greyed out. It’s the only option greyed out, and is required for console play as all of the other aspect ratios stretch the image. 2. When in PBP mode, all adjustments are disabled and some kind of default color/contrast/brightness scheme is enabled. This results in the image when gaming on console to be dim and almost completely without color. PBP mode could be a workaround for issue number one if this wasn’t also defective. Here’s the worst part, though, and something that will absolutely sink this company in the US market: the customer support is terrible. I called their support line and wasn’t greeted. Nothing formal was said to indicate that I had reached a support department. Just something along the lines of “yes, hello?” While explaining my issue, I was interrupted rudely by the agent who stated “our monitors (are) not for game consoles.” I explained that the 4:3 ratio wasn’t available on my PC either, and he responded that I should try another cable. I tried two different DisplayPort cables to no avail, then two different HDMI cables to no avail. These cables work with other high resolution monitors just fine, including a 34” ultra wide and a 28” 4K. He said at this point there was nothing he could do to help. I responded that, per the manual, the 4:3 aspect ratio should be an option. I asked what could cause the monitor disable that option. He responded that he doesn’t know. I asked for my case to be escalated to a more technical department, and he said they don’t do that. I asked to speak with a supervisor, and he said there is no supervisor, that he’s the only person in support in the United States. That’s it. That was the whole conversation. I’ve worked in and managed support teams, and this is the worst support experience I’ve been exposed to. I’ve did the next logical thing; I described my experience on twitter and tagged AOC. They responded that they’d like to help and that I should DM them my contact details. I did so and didn’t hear back for a day. I messaged them again asking if they received my info and when I should expect to be contacted. They said they needed more time. I waited another day and received no contact. I’ve returned this monitor to Amazon as of today. Regardless of the stats and features of their hardware, I’ll never buy another AOC product simply because of this customer support experience. I would have been willing to work with them and await a firmware update to resolve my issues, but this type of treatment is not worth it, not acceptable.
