★☆☆☆☆
Racism in Children’s Book. Great.
In Colin Meloy’s Under Wildwood, the little Korean girl is referred to as “The Chinese” twice before I stopped reading (by p.283), finally deciding that casual racism against Asians wasn’t worth continuing for. Imagine being an Asian kid, excited to read a wondrous woodland tale and they get to this part. How utterly shattering to see the one Asian character experience the all-too-familiar microagression of being purposefully misidentified around where she’s from AND then being made into an object: “The Chinese.” Are you serious?! And what does this teach all the other kids who read this book? I’m so tired of the normalization of racism against Asians. This is unacceptable.
