Kindle Oasis Blues
So I just returned to my Kindle Oasis and ordered a replacement Kindle Voyage. I can't believe that I have had to do this. Few things excite me as much as the prospect of getting a new Kindle e-reader. I was so sure the Oasis was going to be amazing that I gave away my Kindle Voyage before I even received it. I have been using the Oasis for about a month and I have to say it is just not as good as the voyage. Yes, the Oasis is a little bit lighter without the case, but also without the case the battery life is not great. Literally a few days of heavy reading and the battery will be dead. So basically you have to have the case with you all the time, and I didn't realize how annoying it would be to have a Kindle that is basically two parts that you always have to worry about keeping together. Also, clearly the magnetized connection between the device and the case is not perfect, because I constantly, at least several times a day, will get error messages saying that the device cannot connect to the case battery. This has resulted several times in my device just dying because it is out of power. I have literally never had that happen with a previous Kindle e-reader so it is rather amazing. At this price point, you would think this device would be superior in all ways, but the Kindle voyage had a built-in light meter that would dim the display automatically or brighten it depending on your reading environment, the Kindle Oasis does not have this feature. WTF? The Kindle Oasis is also lighter by 2 ounces, but the fact that it is weighted to one side and that you constantly have to flip it around is not great. It's not a deal-breaker, but I don't like it. I also prefer the soft-touch buttons that are on the Voyage to the big hard buttons that are on the Oasis. Again, not a deal-breaker, but another domino in the chain. So yeah, I'm unhappy. And I will no longer be ordering new Kindle e-readers just because they make them. Overall a real step back as far as I'm concerned. It's so rare that Amazon makes me feel a sad face, but today is one of those days. :(
