UPDATE SEPT 8 2015 The review below concerns a 1st Generation Nest Protect. So why is it here under the 2nd Generation Product? Because at the time I wrote it I was absolutely ignorant about there being a 1st vs a 2nd Gen product. I'm also angry and indignant as a result of the product I purchased and have no qualms in letting people know it. If you read my reviews they are overwhelmingly positive. But the fact is I'm not cutting Nest any slack here - The fact that a $100 smoke detector is good for only 1 false alarm and that the automatic firmware updates cant address the problem is as far as I'm concerned a huge problem. It should not be necessary to spend another $100 because the the 1st $100 I spent on a product with a claimed 10 year life span to replace a $19 smoke detector ended up being a complete rip off. I'm angry and unapologetic and I hope the people at Nest read this this and comment. ------------------------------- ORIGINAL REVIEW I'd give this a ZERO if I could. We've had our nest for 2 years and up until last night I thought we loved it. This thing has one major flaw that we just discovered. Last night our BBQ gave off more smoke than normal and set off the Nest alarm - no problem - we pushed the button and silenced it. But the BBQ kept smoking and the alarm went off again - only this time we couldn't silence it. It just kept ringing and every time we pushed the silence button it gave message "This alarm cannot be silenced" It rang for 20 minutes without ceasing so I unplugged it and completely disconnected it from the house and put it outside into clean air - but that wouldn't stop it either. I couldn't silence with the button, or the app and it just rang and rang and rang and rang for another hour driving me, my family and our entire neighborhood crazy. I FINALLY HAD TO TAKE A HAMMER TO IT TO SHUT IT UP - What a colossal wast of money. Shame on you NEST.
