WARNING: 2 TYPES OF FELIWAY – CEVA VS. COMFORT ZONE
I do not usually have the time or inclination to write product reviews however; I hope my recent experiences with Feliway containing products can help save others countless hours of frustration and expense.
My partner and I live in a reasonably sized apartment with two cats; a Bengal and a DSH rescue. We have had both cats for almost a year and have had a happy and loving home. Throughout this time, we have used one Feliway diffuser (replaced every month), fed them a high quality, grain-free diet, provided plenty of scratching posts/toys and never had a problem.
When I went online to reorder our Feliway refills as usual, I noticed a combination pack of two which was slightly less expensive than the single product I had previously been purchasing. Believing this to be the same item, I purchased it. Within only one day of replacing the Feliway diffuser with the new product, our loving, adorable angles, transformed into biting, neurotic hellions. Fear takes on a different aspect when you have 20 lbs. of Bengal (with claws twice the size of your average house cat) try and climb up your leg like a scratching post!
Exasperated, I turned to the internet to try and find an explanation. What I realized is that even though the products I had purchased look nearly identical, have nearly identical ingredients and are both made to be used with a Feliway diffuser; they are in fact two different products, by two different manufacturers (Ceva and Comfort Zone), being made in different countries.
In desperation, I had the original version (Ceva) express shipped to me and within hours of replacing the diffuser, my purring darlings were back (phew!).
What I have learned is the Feliway refill branded as ‘Ceva’ with the ingredient composition phrased as, “F3 fraction of feline facial pheromone analogue” is the product which works. The version branded as ‘Comfort Zone’ with the ingredient composition phrased as, “Analogue of feline facial pheromone” does not work.
The ingredients sound extremely similar so why one should work and the other fail I can’t begin to guess (I am not a chemist). This is just based on my own experience. There are several reviews on Amazon claiming a variety of results from Feliway and I can’t help but believe this is due to the difference in quality between these two products.
I hope this review sheds some light on this issue and helps others to buy the correct product to help aid (or simply calm) their pets. Please be aware that Feliway alone will not solve behavioral problems; please research proper dietary requirements, scratching/play needs and possible health concerns.
