There are many electric kettles out there to choose from. I chose this one primarily because it is glass--I like to watch the water boiling, and it was very reasonably priced. I have now been using it for over 6 months and I still really like it: I would be willing to say that it has exceeded my expectations. The water isn't touching any plastic, the construction is quite good especially the cord. The automatic shut off feature has never failed, it comes to a rolling boil--plenty hot enough for loose leaf black teas. It even has a ring of light around the base while the water is boiling, so it is all lit up and cheerful. The only negative comment I can make is that the thin red decorative strip around the lid is lifting where it's closest to the spout. Not a functional issue at all, and I'm only mentioning it because otherwise this review might sound too good to be true. I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend this to anyone considering a new kettle. Update: Less than two weeks since my first review of this item, the kettle is now not safe to use. It was not abused or overfilled. Although I am not an expert, it appears that the lid is not able to withstand the heat of the boiling water and it has warped so badly that the auto shutoff feature no longer functions. That makes it unsafe to use as it is advertised, since you cannot leave the room and you must watch it and turn it off manually. No matter what else I like about it, this makes it worthless. I am sorry to have to change my review so drastically, and I hope it is still returnable.
