★★☆☆☆
*Spoilers* Very well written book I didn't like.
Let's go through the good:
The characters were well developed, interesting, logical, and fun! Excellent job by the author.
The plot was interesting.
The pacing was overall good, but there were a few slow spots where my attention tried to wander.
Now let's go through the list of the bad:
Well, for starters, the neuroscience doesn't make sense. What this book is telling us is that you can knit intricate doilies ...with a jackhammer. And honestly, it's worse than that. We don't have the miniaturization NOW to do the kind of brain interaction that Demos was able to do in 1985.
Next, we have Demos. He's a smart guy who invented time travel. And his math proved that time travel creates a new universe. But instead of believing his own math, he decides he did the impossible and time traveled back into his own universe. Why did he decide to believe that? The reader is basically given a big fat "dunno". And this apparent impossibility is then used by Demos to justify a horrible decision that prevents the book from ending in a 'happily ever after'. Quite frankly, I found it sloppy.
Oh, and while Demos may have found it justifiable, I did not. Exchanging a life for some memories is criminal.
Another problem with the time travel I noticed was when Demos told Nick that he had to disable the alarm on the door so Nick could get in. So that Nick could grow up to be Demos. So Demos could go back in time and disable the alarm on the door. Do you see the circular problem here?
Synopsis / Teaser says "Challenge accepted." at the end. It never felt like the characters in the book accepted the challenge. Instead, the book is all about teenagers who are dragged into actions because the only alternative they see is worse.
And there were a very few grammar errors.
TL;DR: The worldbuilding flaws and moral choices soured my enjoyment of the book. Will not read sequel. Final score: 2 stars.
