Factual errors indelibly stain this book.
Regarding the stand off with the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas, Ms. Montell writes that the families of Branch Davidians had, "..tipped off the FBI, who, in February 1993, seized the Branch Davidian compound" in what she purports to be an effort to "save" the Davidians (pp. 38-39). This is false. The incident began when ATF Agents attempted to serve a search warrant for illegal weapons and explosives at the that compound. The Davidians, who had been tipped off about the impending raid, waited in ambush and when the ATF Agents arrived, engaged them in a 2.5 hour gun battle in which four ATF Agents were killed and twenty more were wounded. Six Davidians were also killed and several others wounded. Only then did the FBI respond because they have the responsibility of investigating the murder of Federal Agents. Federal law enforcement authorities were on the property not because of the Davidians’ religious beliefs or because they deemed the Branch Davidians to be a "cult" as alleged by Ms. Montell. They were there because the Davidians were violating federal law. This has been thoroughly documented in the media, in congressional hearings, and even in the Vox news report Ms. Montell sites as her source. This isn't a matter of patriarchy, Ms. Montell, it's a matter of truth telling.
