Fast but buggy
2020-04-25 TL;DR I've returned this drive and got a T5 instead. The T5 works fine. I really wanted to like this (the 2TB model) but it's unreliable. I may try it again after Samsung has fixed the bugs, but for now I'll be returning it soon. I tried Samsung's support and it routed me down a road to nowhere, so I'm done. The good: It's really fast when it works. Things like copying enormous file folders to and from it seem fine. The unacceptable: Downloading multiple file streams to it from the Internet results in the drive just hanging for seconds at a time. Eventually, it wakes up, but this repeats again and again. I also have the T3 and T5 and they don't have this problem. In case anyone at Samsung is listening: I installed the setup software on a Mac and set a password and 4 fingerprints. I also updated it to the latest firmware. I left the filesystem as it was out of the box (exfat) The machine I actually use it on is a Chromebook, specifically the Google Pixelbook (original, not the Go). Update 2020-04-19: I exchanged it for the same model and the replacement has the same issue. I have to decide now whether I want to keep it in the hopes that Samsung fixes the bug or give up on the T7 and get a T5 instead. Samsung, I'm not your beta tester, but I'll be happy to submit a detailed report of the problem if you give me an easy way to do that. Update 2020-04-23: It's worse than I thought. The drive essentially shuts down sporadically even while just playing a video file stored on it. That makes it only good for file backup. I can't believe this thing made it to market, how did they even test it?
