I am interested in smart locks and thought I would try out the August. After installing the lock I noticed that the motor is every under powered to drive the deadbolt. If it encounters any resistance from an uneven strike plate (common in older homes) the motor that drives in the deadbolt stops and does not lock completely. Also the plastic adapter that fits into the tailpiece has a lot of play in the fitting. If you use the August manually after a few days it will eventually become lose and sag in the housing. It did not matter how many times I tightened it. The internal parts are the most concerning. The Kwikset Smart Lock is also infamous for plastic internal parts. This lock can be easily defeated with a flat-head screwdriver placed in the key way and twist by using a pair of pliers. The plastic parts, unlike metal, can be stripped when applying enough force and the deadbolt can be unlocked without a key. In my professional opinion the August Smart Lock is a novelty and should not be used to protect your home.
