Backfired - the constant nagging required by this book made our son toilet training resistant
These are great ideas, in theory... If only they had worked for us. We followed everything to a T, but the book lacks a troubleshooting section. Maybe the author assumes her methods will work without fail (unless I'm "doing it wrong," of course), but when our potty training devolved into our son screaming and crying and sitting on the potty but refusing to pee, crying hysterically when some accidentally leaked out, it was up to a Google search to help figure out what's going wrong. We ended up in a stalemate at 6pm on Day 1: our son would not pee in the potty and we would not put him back in diapers, as instructed by the book. The book offered nothing on what to do at this point - he was desperate to empty his full bladder but could only do it by having an accident.
Day 2 ended at 3pm (as did our potty training horror story) - he was holding his bladder until nap time or bed time and emptying his bladder when he got his "sleeping underwear" (night time pull-ups) on. Again, nothing about solving this anywhere in the book.
I'd only recommend this book to someone who is confident that their kid will do what the book says they will do... and we all know how well kids follow the book.
*Update* - I sent an email to the author asking for advice. My email went unanswered.
*Update* - It's been over a year and a half since we tried this method, and our son is now officially considered "toilet training resistant" - Google papers on this by BD Schmitt, MD. He has found that kids who resist potty training were started on a program like this, where the parents follow the kids 24/7 and remind (nag) them about the potty every ten minutes. I wish we had never tried the method described in this book. We had no idea the harm it could cause.
*Update* - It's been about two and a half years since we tried the method in this book, and I am SO glad to say that we have successfully potty trained TWO children now, despite this book! Our oldest, the one we screwed up using this method, finally agreed to use the potty less than a year ago, at well over three years old. The secret? We had the little potty out but had given up, mostly. While my husband and I were completely distracted by our younger child, our oldest just went over to the potty and used it. Nobody was paying attention, nobody was nagging or cheering. He just did it, on his own. It was such a relief for all of us. Since he was older, he quickly mastered potty training.
Now, I held off on attempting to potty train my younger son because my experience with my oldest, using this book, was SO AWFUL. When day care started potty training my younger son at about two and a half years old, I realized I better get on board. I read about half the chapters in a different book (Oh Crap! Potty Training) and made an attempt. I did my best to follow the advice for his age range and act like I didn't care. It worked. He was peeing in the potty in no time. He was more resistant to pooping in the potty, but the same "apathy" worked again. It took a few days, but he got it, on his own terms, when nobody was paying attention to him.
Since both my boys are potty trained now, I won't have any additional updates, unless it's just to remind people NOT to buy this book!! Save yourself the months (years!) of frustration, crying on the couch after the kids are asleep, and searching the internet for hours and hours for a way to fix what this book screwed up.
