I rate this show 5 stars! The writing is amazing, it was funny and it had everything I wanted out of a SATIRICAL APOCALYPSE STORY! Let's get that BS out of the way! This is SATIRE! I am directing this at all the right-wing Christians who are writing reviews solely because it challenges their view of Christianity and politics.
Nowhere in this show is any religion ever mentioned! Not Christianity, Satanism, Wicca or anything else! It deals with mythologies from all of them, but it never mentions the religions itself. As a whole it deals with the ideologies of those three religions remarkably accurately! Witches are just women who practice medicine or home cures, maybe believe in light magic and were burned for it. Satanists often don't believe in a god to begin with and believe in life and treating humans fairly regardless of dogma. And Christians (most notably from the voice of god) Hold firm to their beliefs that science is wrong, war is masculine, we are chosen by god, I'm right, you're wrong, DON'T QUESTION ME or what I perceive is the voice of my god!
I love that god is portrayed by a woman (not as a woman) because from the get go it challenges the viewers' preconceived notions of who god is and what their priorities are. Non of which are ever stated clearly as in real life Christianity. For me it was very nice that "god" immediately puts aside that human science and evidence for evolution are all just an elaborate farce for humans to think the world is older than it is, answering one of the most prominent questions about evolution "If there is evidence the world is billions of years old but it's actually 6000, did god plant that evidence to confuse scientists?" It removed a little cognitive dissonance. In this fictional world, the earth is 6000 years old, and the dinosaurs are all a divine joke. It allowed me to believe the narrative, while also commenting on christian "scientists" who'd rather ignore the evidence against creationism.
It also portrays Jesus as a divinely appointed victim and makes no reference to him rising from the grave. I particularly loved the pity in Tennant's eyes when he said he tried to show him the world before he died.
ACTUAL REVIEW OF THE QUALITY: Yes, the plot was a bit predictable but I'm not looking for mad twists and turns in a satire about one of the oldest speculative subjects on earth. The CGI was fine, I don't expect Avengers quality from a TV show. Also the handling of the four horsemen reminded me of Supernatural, the four bikers each are quirky and mysterious, although I did like the Pestilence was changed to Pollution. The commentary on environmentalism didn't seem to dominate the story nor did it seem shoehorned in, and as someone who tries to be environmentally friendly, it was a nice touch, didn't really try to pose a solution from the audience or for Adam though, which was a little upsetting. Same can be said for the sexism and racial equality, good notions, no suggested actions, and I feel the girl was played for laughs a little.
Tennant and Sheen dominate the screen! Their interactions are comedic gold, and of course I've always loved David Tennant from Doctor Who. I loved watching them test each other and battle their natures. In the small twist at the end I was expecting them to have changed enough internally that their respective kryptonites no longer harmed them, the switch was a bit underwhelming and I felt it robbed character development a little. No problem over all, still loved it.
In conclusion: watch this show as satire, please. View this as a fictional narrative and acknowledge this work of comedy does nothing to actually affect you or your beliefs. And try to have fun with it--Or go watch Doctor Who instead, I don't care. David Tennant is amazing.
