Dangerous, unsafe, irritant, can degrade breathing and lung capacity
In human experiments this decreased the vital capacity of lungs and 70% of this chemical is absorbed by the lungs into the blood. d-limonene has a long half-time in blood. Cite: d-limonene exposure to humans by inhalation doi: 10.1080/15287399309531702. d-limonene oxidizes via ozone present naturally in the air into formaldehyde, 4-acetyl-1-methylcyclohexene, and formic acid! It also decomposes into hydroperoxides Which then decomposes into sulfenic acid. Even worse studies show that the combination of small household amounts of limonene and oxidizing cleaners create harmful quantities of formaldehyde. Cleaners like ammonia also cause harmful gases. "Reactions with nitrogen oxides produce aerosol formation as well as lower molecular weight products, such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, formic acid, acetone, and peroxyacetyl nitrate (Altshuller, 1983)." Cite: Concise International Chemical Assessment Document 5, LIMONENE, World Health Organization 1998 ISBN 92 4 153005 7 "Inhalation of limonene vapor increases serotonin and dopamine levels in key regions of the brain that are associated with anxiety, depression, and OCD." The MSDS is not a good read. "Highly volatile, flammable" "product may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways." "Inhalation may cause irritation of the nose, throat, and respiratory" "Keep away from foodstuffs, beverages and feed." The active ingredient d-Limonene is basically distilled orange terpene just like distilled pine resin is turpentine. My personal experience using this product on a window sill and a few cracks resulted in itchy eyes, burning throat, followed by the same type of anxiety that comes on you do when you've been breathing forrest fire smoke and can't escape in the summer. Except this time in the comfort of my own overpoweringly orange scented home. Then a mild headache and aching lungs for several days. The orange smell is overpowering and takes days before it goes away because "subjects could detect the odor at 8 and 15 ppb" You also can't dispose of this in the garbage or down the drain because it's harmful to aquatic life! This stuff is used as a aircraft wheel degreaser with full PPE gloves, closed eye splash guard protection , apron. I wouldn't want my worst enemy to use this on their own home. It also has a shelf life which is not listed anywhere. As cited above it degrades in regular air into far worse chemicals that are also irritants and can harm your breathing. Don't take my word for it, look up the citations. Always be extremely careful when you hear extraordinary claims about all natural ingredients.
