★★☆☆☆
This sharpener is both excellent and awful all at once. Here's why.
If you read over the negative and positive reviews of this knife sharpener, you'll find a significant gap between "this is amazing!" and "this thing is a knife-destroying piece of junk!" The truth is, it's 100% both. This device, especially for the price, seems to work miracles and will put an edge on the dullest, oldest, crappiest knife you own. Make no doubt about it, it will absolutely (and aggressively) shave the edge of a knife into the fixed taper the sharpening edges in the handle are set at, and compared to the dull piece of crap edge your knife used to have that will seem amazing. If you own cheap knives and you have no intention of ever investing the time or energy in properly sharpening, this thing is amazing. Shave the crap out of your cheap knives, resharpen them with this thing whenever they get dull, and when they get ruined just throw them out and buy more cheap knives. If that's you, and I'm not passing judgment here, this is a perfect product for you. It's better to have sharp crappy knife than dull ones, so just sharpen away until the blade is too damaged by this thing to soldier on any longer. The other crowd that says "this thing is a knife-destroying piece of junk!"... those folks are right too. Yes, this will take a cruddy old dull knife and put an edge on it. It won't put an edge on it properly though and it's far too aggressive. If you drag a good knife through this thing you'll do more harm than good. If you have nice knives you must either undertaken learning how to sharpen them yourself (I use the ol' Japanese whetstone method because I find the whole affair to be meditative and fun) or just send them out to be sharpened. There's no shame in not wanting to do it yourself and have a pro do the work. So there you have it. Cheap knives and you don't care about long-term quality or preserving the knife? Use this. It really does work. Have good knives? Don't use this. It will chew the hell out of a good blade and make you regret every dollar you spent on it.
