This is my 2nd Cygolite tail light and will probably be my last. I had a Cygolite Hotshot 2-Watt USB Rechargeable Taillight with USB Cable and it broke after 3 years, which is acceptable for a piece of electronic. This one BROKE AFTER JUST 1 MONTH. What a shame. What's even worse is I bought this light just before leaving for an overseas bike tour and I had to ride my bike without a tail light for over 500 miles before I could find a decent tail light at a local bike shop. The problem I had with both tail lights is the same so I suspect there's fault in design or a faulty part that is to blame and Cygolite's quality department just hasn't noticed it yet. What happens is basically this: I ride my bike for a few hours, turn off the light when I am done and when I try to turn on the light the next day, it won't come on. At first I thought it could be that the battery is not that good so it drains after a few hours of use but I found out that wasn't the case when I charged it overnight, used it for half an hour, and when I tried to turn it on next time, it still won't turn on. So the next time I tested it with just 5 minutes of use after a full charge and still the same thing. I found out what was wrong at last when someone at the hostel told me my bike's tail light was on in the middle of the night. I was sure I had turned it off so it somehow magically turned itself on after a while. I tested it multiple times, when I turn it off and leave, it comes back on after a random period. It could be 5 minutes, it could be half an hour. You never know. And of course, this drains the battery and leaves you without a tail light the next time you want to ride your bike. Anyways, I didn't bother to contact Cygolite about the first tail ight that had this problem as I was way out of warranty (3 years) but this new one broke within a month of use so I contacted them and explained to them that I am in the middle of nowhere in Europe and I needed a light as soon as possible. I also told them that I would send back the broken unit when I get back but they told me they couldn't ship it to Europe as the shipping fee was $12. They sent a replacement unit to my friend still in the country who will join me in a week so at least that was a nice gesture. At the end of the day, I don't think Cygolite is a bad company. They make awesome headlights, I have two, both purchased on Amazon as well but I don't think I will ever buy a tail light from them again as they have a chronic problem and instead of trying to fix it immediately for customer experience, they worried about shipping costs. This is not a saddle bag or bottle cage, this is a safety equipment and I expect it to be top notch quality and the company to do everything in its power to ensure its customers safety.
