We had these in our home for 2 days when we noticed that our hot water heater wasn't functioning properly, then we also noticed that flame on our gas stove was an orange color as apposed to it's usual blue. After some investigation my husband found several articles on the internet explaining that this is caused by a lack of oxygen particles in the air, we then went on to read that ultrasonic humidifiers are often responsible for this as the water molecules are dispersed in the air certain microscopic minerals are released, some of which take up the oxygen in the air. So basically the gas flame couldn't breath well because of the lack of oxygen. Incidentally neither could we! After just 2 days I had a chronic cough and my daughter had 3 nose bleeds. With in an hour of turning the humidifier off the gas flame was blue and I stopped coughing. I did read using distilled water may help with some of the issues, but our family has definitely decided they are not something we want in our home!
