Worms.
I wanted to try buying dates from someplace other than WF where they're somewhat pricey. I went for the top rated ones on Amazon, bought a 2-pack, and it was a mistake. It was a get-what-you-pay-for kind of situation.
I saw some reviewers complain and so while the majority of ratings are positive, I proceeded with caution. The first one had a little dried up worm in it, with what I thought were several eggs. After a search, it turns out it's actually a ton of worm droppings. So gross. Another one that passed the visual test had fermented and I had to spit it out after taking a second to figure it out and getting the full impact of the flavor. Another one was mummified and completely dried out with a web-like substance in it, indicating to me it was quite old. I'm just getting started with the bag...Not going to be able to finish.
It's kind of like taking a jolly stroll through a beautiful Mary Poppins dream-like meadow, and when your midway through the meadow, you're told there are landmines hidden within this lovely meadow.
It seems to me that the obvious thing to do here would be put a warning on the packaging of what to expect, because who knows how many people have eaten bugs and bug poop? But then again, I'm sure that would lead to a huge drop in sales. Maybe they could spin it as part of the Paleo diet?
I found it in several more so far and regret buying a 2-pack as it was a huge waste of money, instead of big savings like I imagined. I'll go back to the more expensive ones, but I will NEVER bite directly into a date again, and I suggest that you don't either. Pull them in half and inspect each one first.
I took a lot of pics for the purpose of this review and showing my friends, but I'll just add 3 for reference. Hope this helps.
