Love this booked this book initally, BEGINNERS BEWARE! (updated review)
Found this book shortly after having the thought about learning to make my own soap. Love, love this book. Really easy to understand and laid out in such a fashion that it makes it a great reference book too. Everything explained step by step and a bunch of easy to follow soap recipes to get started with. Highly recommend it.
Loved this book initially BUT over time I began having significant problems with my skin and hair (shampoo bar). It took me took me some time to figure things out. Eventually I determined that the PH in my bars was to high. My problem with this book is that no where in the book does she discuss PH and testing your bars. Something that I feel beginners should learn about. If she had discussed PH and testing soap I would have been easily able to test my bars after the 4-6 week curing period. Instead, I didn't start having clues until about a month after using the soap. High alkaline damages the skin and causes excessive drying and itching BUT it takes a period of time before it shows up. So initially I would have recommended this book but not now! Something as important as discussing the PH and soap for beginners (because of the effect in regards to health) and leaving it out of the book changes that opinion. BEWARE if you're just starting to learn how the make soap.
