★★☆☆☆
Difficult to read seriously
The writing style of the author is decent, which is why I gave this a two star rating, but I can't take the writing seriously. There are so many unbelievable and unrealistic descriptions of what is happening, it is clear the author is mixing fantasy with reality here. As a couple of examples, she (the author) describes the bad guys using percussive grenades, but she also includes a large heat blast from these that starts several trees on fire--she added incendiary features to percussive, but okay whatever. She describes a jeep revving an engine and then flying up and over the top of a Mayan step pyramid, and then they all drive off in the jeep, escaping the bad guys. Seriously? The jeep isn't going to get to the top, much less fly over the top, and far much less able to still drive away afterwards. It was extremely painful reading a section about them scaling an 8 foot wall. They could probably nearly reach the top with their hands while just standing on the ground, but she describes this long drawn out, difficult process for these men to scale the wall. After a lot of effort and work, one had made it up four feet and had four feet still to go, and took forever to do it. How?!? Another one was having difficulty climbing, so another guy, after having climbed up a ways moved over directly beneath the struggling one to help him climb higher. WHAT? She wrote as if they were scaling a 50 foot wall rather than an 8 foot wall. So much of what is described skews so far from reality that it is very difficult to read and/or take seriously. Maybe this writing should be in the humor category. As to the controversial stuff other reviewers have mentioned, I haven't gotten that far into the series and I don't think I will--I'm off to read something else now.
