Damages your knife edge and does not sharpen!!! - Also too low cost to return per Amazon policy
So I have two gripes - one about this item and one about Amazon's "too low cost to return" policy.
First of all about this product. I purchased this based on the rave positive reviews and because I have expensive kitchen knives that have gotten dull and beyond the ability of the honing rod to restore the edge. I've spent the last week learning about knife sharpening and realize that there isn't an easy way to do this if you're looking for razor sharp, slice through paper, shave the hair of your arm kind of sharp. People who care about their knives should not buy "pull-through" sharpeners unless they have ceramic or diamond hone material. AVOID ANY PRODUCT WITH CARBIDE GRINDERS!!!!! I'll say it again... AVOID ANY PRODUCT WITH CARBIDE GRINDERS!!!!! I've learned the hard way being a noob last week when I bought this. I used it on my Henkel chef knife and saw two things - the carbide was ripping MASSIVE amounts of metal off my knife AND it was so bad that the edge of the knife became ragged and rough. Lastly, the knife while it could cut was not sharp!! It was only able to cut because it was more like a saw vs. a razor blade. The ceramic part of this product was ineffective of doing any sharping. It was no better than my honing rod. I literally ruined the knife and was pretty upset. So much so I did more research on ended up buying a sharpening system product that uses stone for sharpening. Fortunately, after much work, I got an edge back on my henkel that's razor sharp. PLEASE, if you have expensive knives DO NOT use this product. It will ruin them. I don't believe this product is good for anything.
For those who disagree with me.. do me a favor. Take your knife that you've "sharpened" with this product and try to see if you can effortlessly use it to slice through paper. True test would be any flimsy magazine or newspaper stock. A razor sharp knife would be able to do this with absolutely no issue and very little effort. My Henkel that was "sharpened" with a ragged edge ran ragged on any paper I had. It was not sharp. I think people think the knife is sharper than before because as I stated the carbide pulls chunks off the edge of the blade so it looks and behaves more like a saw with "tooth".
Secondly, for those of you who want to purchase this just to try it out, realize that you won't be able to return this item per Amazon's invisible or not clearly stated return policy for items that cost too low to ship back. This item is cheap and because of it, it costs Amazon more money to ship it back vs. not. So when you try to return it, you'll be met with a statement that this item is not eligible for return and then it refers you to their return policy page. However, after reading the whole thing it was not clear why I was ineligible. I had to contact customer support to find out. Luckily, the rep was nice enough to manually refund me. BUYER BEWARE!!! This product has all sorts of bad and won't be worth the trouble.
