I've been a huge Gabriel Allon fan for twenty books now, so I was a little shocked when the author not only broke the fourth wall between reader and storyteller, he steamrolled the wall and smashed it into smitherines. I think it's fun when authors obliquely weave their stories into today's news, but this bizarre Trump Derangement Syndrome immersion had me skimming the last quarter of the book and calling it a day. The author hijacked his own story and basically ruined the Gabriel Allon twenty book arc. The lefty diatribe was as stupid as it was unrealistic. Spoiler Alert. Stop reading if you don't want to know... ...that Gabriel saves Biden from assassination but gets shot by a 4-term Republican congresswoman Qanon worshipper. No kidding. And that's just the tip of the derangement iceberg. The TDS crapola not just an aside - it's the whole non sequitur wrap up to the story. What an amazing shark jumping book for an otherwise incredibly enjoyable hero. I used to really look forward to Gabriel's next adventure. Not any more.
