Characters too "good" to be true
I feel like the Grinch for hating this book, but Good Lord, I like to choked to death on how sweety-sweet and nicey-nice everybody and everything was. Some sort of rural Forest Gump fantasy. Every small town has a gossip or a shrew. For that matter, all people have a good and bad side. But ALL the people in good ol' Prosper were just good. Helpful, friendly, cheerful, honest, kind, smiling, happy. Then there is the MC, Melinda... I tried to like Melinda, but she's kind of a spoiled whiner. If you lost your job months ago and had no prospects and were facing eviction, wouldn't you jump at a full-time job and free place to stay? Not Melinda. She just whinges about living with her parents. If you love your aunt and uncle, have no job or any obligations, wouldn't you jump at the chance to help them out when he has a heart attack? Not Melinda. She whines about leaving the city and tells her aunt she needs time to think it over. She's just not very likeable. Sorry. I love start over stories and adore rural settings. I'm a farm girl myself. But this was a tough read. Super slow, zero plot and horribly sweet. I wish this book had been about Horace. Or even the aunt. They were way more interesting. With no plot to talk about, the author goes on and on about each little detail. We don't need to know what Melinda packed in each tote and where she puts it. I couldn't take it. It's a no for me.
