There is an Odor
I purchased this version of Bialetti’s stove-top coffee maker because I believed the stainless steel version would leave less of a metallic trace in my morning beverage.
With the original, I could not get the “smell” out of my coffee. Unfortunately, even after thoroughly cleaning this product, running clean water through it, and replacing the rubber gasket with a silicone one, the strange odor it produces remains. Some friends have said they don’t smell it. Others do straight away and describe it as a “sweet metallic” odor. Not a typical coffee profile.
I isolated the source of the smell to the bottom water chamber. There is something in the coating that Bialetti uses that, when heated, must break down and emit this smell. As I stated before, it can be tasted in the coffee, too.
Bialetti is a well-established name and company and Italians have been using their products for decades. I wanted to love the mokka pot and could not get passed the odor. Sadly, I am unable to recommend this version for the same reason. And because I am not confident in the safety of the water chamber’s coating potentially leaving trace elements behind, it will only earn one star from me.
