Upsetting and frustrating for both kids and parents...
What a waste of time, effort, and money. I pre-ordered 2 of these, one for each boy, and received them both on the date of their release. I thought they would be perfect for my sons on the airplane when we went on vacation. I also ordered a 64GB micro-SD card for each, for additional storage, thinking I could download a lot of games without a problem. What a joke. After a couple nights of setting up each tablet (doesn't come with instructions) and downloading a bunch of free highly rated games (all of which were saved to the SD card and totaled less than 11 GB) I was ready to unveil these to them. And soon after the problems started. The main problem being the device's internal storage filled up quickly - with nothing! I would look at what was using the internal storage and delete everything I could and it didn't matter - the internal storage was still full or near full, which results in your wifi getting turned off (which you can't turn back on) which results in many of the games not working. In addition to all that, when using FreeTime, many of the games that I had allowed access to my kids through FreeTime were no longer pre-loaded. They were accessible - but they'd have to click on the game and wait for the game to be loaded onto FreeTime all over again, which is a time consuming process - and one which you need to be connected to wifi to do. This happened constantly. I don't understand why the games don't just show up in FreeTime ready to play (like they do on the parent's home screen) once you allow your kids access to them, and I don't understand why once you load each one into FreeTime they randomly become "unloaded". Between that and the wifi issue in conjunction with the device's small storage being filled with seemingly nothing and no way to clear it, the device is useless. If you're like me and want a cheap tablet to give your kids and think you can give them a lot of games with the additional micro-SD storage, think again. These devices are useless in that regard. I returned both after several weeks for a full refund and bought a certified refurbished 32GB iPad Mini. It's amazing how much better and smoother that works compared to this. Zero problems. Obviously it's more money but you get what you pay for it seems. The birthday boy gets the mini, his younger brother has access to our iPads (1st gen + 4th gen) and is able to play the same games as his brother without argument. The only downside is we still have to share our iPads with the little guys, but we put some "kid proof" cases on them to protect them. Granted there's no "kid safe" experience, but to be honest there wasn't on the Fire Kids tablet either since it didn't work. It's easier to just pay attention to what they're doing on there. They can't download apps/buy in-app purchases without our password and they don't care about non-games anyway and never mess with the other apps that are all in a separate folder now. Even if they did, fixing/restoring things and redownloading things (if need be) would be a much easier process than dealing with the problems caused by the Fire Kids tablet. Those proved unusable.
