★★☆☆☆
it could/should be a lot better
For 99 cents, I am not sorry I read it, and I even purchased the 4th book (in order to get to a dragon finally and see if that made any difference), but that will be it. The writing quality did seem to improve as I progressed thru the volumes, but numerous errors remained throughout, and I thought the pace was fairly slow while the dialogue felt so contrived much of the time. I also am very annoyed by authors who try to "tease" you into purchasing the next book -- a good story should stand on its own and you should be motivated to buy the next one for that reason, not because you are cast into a cliffhanger at the end, much like a soap opera. Plus, as I read along, it just increasingly bothered me that, except for the pirates who are comprised of all races, the lighter-skinned people are, with a few exceptions, the "good" people, while the darker-skinned people are, with a few exceptions, the "bad" people. A more creative approach to the complexities of race relations would have been appreciated to say the least.
