Comparison of Tranquillam, SnoreX, and AIHHIA sleep mouth guards
Comparison of SnoreX, Tranquillam Sleep, and AIHHIA sleep mouth guards for snoring. First, if you are unlucky enough to be looking at these then you should know all three of these are a step up in comfort from the CPAP. Personally, i couldn't make the CPAP work and avoided confronting my sleep issues for years as if in some way denial would make it go away. For the most part all three mouth guards are quite similar when you open their boxes, the all come with the soft plastic mouth guard in basic u-shape. Each comes with a small hard plastic carrying case as well as the tab used for boiling and molding (more on this piece later). First step for me was to try a rough fitting right out of the box, my first impression was the AIHHIA had the greatest impact of shifting my lower jaw forward, which ideally would have the most positive effect on snoring. However, both the AIHHIA and Tranquillam seemed overly large for my mouth and and the AIHHIA seemed to be a much more rigid plastic. The larger size and rigidity both led to a greater gag-reflex and difficulty closing my mouth which also led to drooling and just general discomfort. All three had the same requirement of warming water to approximately 170 degrees to soften the plastic enough to mold your dental impression into the plastic. This is actually a quite scary process as you are putting a nearly melted piece of plastic in your mouth that came out of water that was very recently boiling, every instinct says "do not do this". With the proper precaution this isn't a bad process, but do be careful. I found the SnoreX to be the most adaptable material creating a very good form fit and it seemed as though the plastic actually stayed a bit softer after the molding, which may simply be due to a better fit. The AIHHIA fit improved significantly from the initial fitting but still felt too large and the plastic still felt quite rigid. This is where the Tranquillam failed me. The tab used to hold the mouth guard doubles as the space saver for the air hole. After heating the mouth guard and putting it in my mouth for shaping, i realized too late that the spacer tab had withdrawn slightly and when biting down i closed the air holes. I tried to reheat and reopen the holes but it was effectively ruined. That said, I put it in my mouth for a fit comparison and felt it was still too large and a bit more rigid than the SnoreX, but not nearly as large or rigid as the AIHHIA. One other tip, you can trim the back portion of the guards on either side (the part that fits by your molars) by about 1/4 to 1/2" which alleviates a bit of the gag reflex, assuming that affects you. For me, the SnoreX provides a more comfortable fit with a more custom mold and seems to be much less intrusive. Tranquillam ultimately was a wasted spend as I never had the opportunity to use it, the shorter tab is a pretty poor design flaw. AIHHIA, for me (for now) was way too large and rigid but could ultimately be a positive if you can get past the gag reflex, particularly with the way it holds the lower jaw forward. If you are new to this, have a gag reflex, and want a less intrusive feel then the SnoreX is the right one to start with. If you aren't bothered by the gag reflex and are used to wearing a sports mouth guard then AIHHIA could be for you. Tranquillam really needs to address the design flaw for further consideration.
