Digital Heaven and a Bagful of Gimmicks
So when you die, you get unloaded to digital heaven if you can afford it. This might have been a clever premise for storytelling. Unfortunately, “Upload” is more about digital special effects than it is about telling a story with interesting characters.
Obviously, a committee of writers sat around coming up with what they must have thought were clever situations when it comes to mixing digital computer possibilities with the world they created called “Lakeview”. The writers were trying to be clever, but for me, “Upload” is gimmicky.
For example, Nathan Brown urinates with supernatural control. Why would anyone think that this is interesting for us to watch? And Nora Antony smells like cinnamon rolls baking? What is that about?
I don’t like watching other people having sex, but the soft porn in “Upload” is almost laughable. I fast forward through sex scenes because I find them boring. Also, there’s a bit of swearing, but it really wasn’t that noticeable or offensive to me. Some people found the swearing objectionable, and I think that should be taken into consideration.
I made it to episode 2. The digital talking dog psychiatrist was too much for me.
I don’t think “Upload” is funny or clever. Other than a digital heaven and a bagful of gimmicks, I don’t see that “Upload” offers much of a storyline.
