My wife woke me up at 3 am this morning telling me that the door handle doesn't work, one of our kids is crying, and we're trapped in the bedroom. The door handle moved, but there was a strange friction and the latch wouldn't release. We searched the entire bedroom for a screwdriver to dismantle the handle, but there wasn't one. I video chatted with one of my daughters who found a screwdriver, but it wouldn't fit under the door jam. We tried nail clippers and scissors, but couldn't unscrew the handle screws. My wife started having a panic attack, dry heaving, while saying over and over again that we need to call the police to break down the door. My daughter was able to pass a screw head bit and pliers under the door. I unscrewed the handle, but it was the latch mechanism that was busted. A metal gear inside the latch mechanism popped out the top and wasn't moving the latch. I still wasn't able to unlatch the door. Grabbing the pliers, I pulled and twisted the cheap metal latch mechanism until I was able to pull it in the door socket and open the door. It was time for a pot of coffee and to start my day. TL;DR - The metal latch mechanism is cheap bendable garbage. Sleep next to a screwdriver and pliers.
