I can't believe that Michael C. Hall thought that this episode was written well..
This first episode was pretty disappointing...
(Warning! This review has SPOILERS.)
There are so many plot devices in this first episode that are pushing so hard for left leaning rhetoric, that at one point it just got annoying. Where do I start? Oh! I know! Reintroduce Dexter (a serial killer who has a NEED to kill..) be against hunting?! Check. Introduce a side character who hates the rich? Check. Introduce another side character who is gay; talk about adopting? Check. Introduce an unlikeable rich white guy? Check. Make the rich white guy not want to go through a standard background check in order to buy the gun he wants? Check. Another side character criticizes how FBI background checks are not enough when buying a gun? Check. Introduce a Climate Change protest where a petrol billionaire prevents other people from entering a public place? Check. Honestly this first episode feels like it was written by a raging SJW who focused more on their own political beliefs than actually paying attention to the spirit of the show and the charm of it's characters. For example, Deb now plays as Dexter's new spirit guide instead of Harry, but her character here feels forced and is just "there." She doesn't really impart wisdom like Harry did, she just has predictable dialogue. As for Dexter's son Harrison? Such an unclimactic reveal. They introduce right away in the first episode?? Seriously??? From what I can tell; the writing so far in this new season is laughably annoying, lazy, and completely lacks the intensity and charm it's predecessor had.
