Relieved when it was over
I have to chime in with the negative reviewers here: Despite very much sympathizing with Powers' point of view and admiring the excellence of his writing on the level of the line, I found this book tedious. As a reader, I felt he kept beating me about the head with the same theme/politics. Over and over and over...the same story. I'm the kind of person who makes myself read to very end...just in case there's something redeeming. But this book just kept getting more repetitive, more disjointed, more preposterous as it went along. The author had to know he was preaching to the choir after, say, page 200 (because if you didn't agree with him, you would have put the book down sooner), so why did he have to keep berating us? I agree with those who said that they kept getting confused as to which character was who—between the jumping around and use of nicknames, I found myself struggling to keep track of who was who. All in all, I wish I could recommend this book but I just can't. I feel a sense of relief now that I'm finished.
