Does not rapid boil on induction!
Ordered via Amazon, received TH041505LAUG16 JAM review: I received it last night, and I am returning it this morning! The one thing we all take for granted about a pot is that it can boil water! So I put the CopperChef on my induction stovetop (Kenmore Elite by Sears) on its maximum setting and noticed that it was not heating rapidly. I then conducted an experiment. I put 1qt of room temperature tap water in the 3qt pot (a Rachael Ray pot) that I normally use and it came to a rapid boil in 2 minutes and 20 seconds. I then did the same with my 5qt pot (a Le Creuset pot) and it took 2 minutes and 50 seconds. I then repeated the procedure with the CopperChef and after 15 minutes, it still was not rapid boiling like was the case in the other two pots. I then removed the Teflon protector that I put under all my pots, and the times for my two original pots were reduced by 10 seconds. The CopperChef achieved its steady-state slow boil not at 15 minutes but at 10 minutes. This is still well over three times as long but the boil was much slower. In all cases the pots were uncovered. I note that the stovetop has a safety feature that turns itself off after 10 minutes when operating in its maximum "power boost" mode that I used in all cases. For testing the CopperChef, I had to restart the stovetop at the 10-minute point. I also noticed that, contrary from the manufacturer's representations, bubbles formed on the bottom of the pot in a limited fashion suggesting an uneven heat. It appears to me that the CopperChef is made out of an Aluminum alloy that is, of course, not ferrous and therefore will not work with induction. The manufacturer gets around this by attaching a ferrous plate to the bottom of the pot to receive the induced energy and get hot. That is why only the portion of the pot where that plate is attached shows the most bubbles and thus cannot provide "even" heat by design. I called the manufacturer regarding this and the representative said that he had never heard of such a problem and that it must be a manufacturing defect and to get it exchanged. Since it appears to me to be a design problem, I have chosen not to waste more time in getting another one without first a good explanation of the suspected defect. I have included a photo of my initial water observation of the CopperChef and of each pot upon reaching its maximum boil (2:20, 2:50, and 15+ minutes).
