Not bad, yet not a great value
SEE UPDATE, BELOW
I bought these socks to see how they would compare to the Omni Wool socks I have been buying from Sam’s Club for the past 6 or 8 years. They appear to be very similar, from the photos provided. I had to do research online, to find that the Sam’s socks are 70% wool, while the Fun Toes are 50%, so, the Fun Toes start off with a disadvantage.
On the plus side, the Fun Toes socks fit my size 9 ½ feet very well… better than the Sam’s socks, which were always too long, and too constrictive around the foot. I was also pleased that I could order all socks in a single color, which means no more trying to match up colors of the Sam’s socks, where blue and green were difficult to tell apart. The toe seams are done well, so, in most shoes, I don’t feel like I’m walking on the seam, nor have the end of the seam riding against an outside toe. The socks stay up nicely, so I can put them on, and forget about them.
On the negative side, they are lighter weight than the Sam’s socks. They have a looser weave, which is most obvious when you look at the large loops on the inside. While my Sam’s socks had been lasting about 2 years, I think I will be lucky to get 1 year out of these socks… I expect that the loose weave will allow them to break down more easily.
The care instructions say to turn the socks inside out, when washing, same as the Sam’s socks. Also, machine wash, cold, and “air dry to reduce shrinkage” -- no mention of tumble dry, but, it seems to be discouraged, at least. No, no, no, NO… I can’t be bothered with setting socks out, to dry! So, I have tumble dried these socks, on Medium, along with my other clothes. They came out looking a bit smaller, the first time. But, they did not feel any different… so, the machine drying has been a success.
I paid $28 for 6 pairs of Fun Toes. Sam’s socks would be $30 for 6. With the lower wool content and looser weave -- and my expectation of shorter lifespan -- I would say the Fun Toes were overpriced when I bought them.
--- UPDATE ---
I had projected that I would get a year of use out of these socks. It's been 7 months -- including summer, during which I wore socks less often -- and I can see that they will not make the year. The elastic has relaxed significantly, approaching intolerable. I have lowered my rating from 3 stars, to 2 stars.
