Not Ready for Prime Time- I Wanted to Love It
Wow- at first look, this unit was absolutely AWESOME. - No wall wart! - No wires! - Small and nearly invisible! - Great price! HOWEVER, I had 2 issues with this: 1. The plug fit VERY loosely in my Ric 4001 bass. It just was never tight and kind of flopped around and I thought it was going to drop out. 2. Then the dealbreaker: If your band is using wireless digital mixers (Mackie 1608, Behringer X32, etc.) these U2's WILL interfere with them. I play in several bands and our sound crew uses digital wireless mixers that allow us to mix our own IEM monitor mixes with an iPad. Being a singer and multi instrumentalist, this is key for me. Our drummer and guitarist also do this. The SECOND I turned on the U2, all 3 of us lost signal on our ipad mixing consoles. I tried another channel and it did the same thing. Suddenly, we're all getting the "TRYING TO CONNECT" error messages flashing at us and none of us can mix our stuff. As soon as I turned off the U2, everything was back to normal and working. Unfortunately, I had to use a cable for my bass and the U2 (I ordered 2 of them) were promptly sent back to Amazon. I was disappointed, for sure. Xvive has a nice product here. The packaging is very well done, the unit is super compact, and the price is right. I will say the manual print is incredibly tiny- why not have a bigger one under the box foam insert? I had high hopes and read so many glowing reviews and watched a ton of review videos - but in the end, the U2 was useless to me. I'm not sure why they don't use the 5 GHz frequency band as opposed to the 2.4 GHz for these units. The 2.4 GHz network, which is the most common for internet systems, is guarantee to be very crowded. Why not go where the road don't go (to quote Ringo)? If these guys ever build a 5 GHz unit, I may try again. Great idea. Great look. Great packaging. But just doesn't work in a practical live situation where digital wireless mixers are used. If you use an analog board and no wireless gear (in 2018?) you'll be fine. If you're using the latest and greatest, then you might want to go with another system.
