What ever happened to Dewalt?
After purchasing, owning and enjoying countless Dewalt products for ~10 years it saddens me to trash this product. What happened Dewalt? How did the famous yellow fall so low?
I had an almost identical set of Dewalt bits purchased 5+ years ago. I never had a complaint about them. They worked great. Never needed to resharpen them and used them as needed around the house. I had expected a flawless experience with Dewalt tools based on previous experiences so I knew what to expect from the old yellow company. Saddly, a few bits had grown legs and walked off over the years. It was time to buy a new set. Amazon to the rescue with a set that looks and feels just like the old set that performed faithfully for years. Item arrived timely and well packaged (as usual for Amazon).
Then everything went wrong.
I picked them up and used them as usual with the same drill. They bits are worthless. Three bits went dull on the same day and the same project. Wow must have been an exceptionally strong block. I took a ride to a local depot of home products that we all know and love and picked up an extra 1/2" Dewalt bit. Went back to work and same story. The bits are absolute junk. I don't care how cheap they are because they simply don't work. I ended up using a slightly smaller old Dewalt bit from my original set purchased years ago. The size was not ideal but the bits absolutely demolished the block and cut several 3" deep holes. The old, tired, worn bits were in every way better than the new bits they were supposed to replace.
What was the cause of all my trouble? After close examination, I realized there were imposters in the Dewalt family. The bits I had from years ago looked, smelt, and tasted the same as the new bits I bought from Amazon and the local store. However, there were two subtle yet apparently extreme differences. The old bits were slightly more "gold" and a bit less "yellow" in color. Also, the old bits had a small "Germany" stamped under the Dewalt name on the side of the bit. The new guys did not have anything written underneath the "Dewalt" stamp. A quick look at the back of the cardboard packaging reveals the answer. CHINA.
Please save your money and buy something else. There are many China made bit sets that are just fine and dandy for a single use. They cost less than this set and are probably no worse than this set. Don't waste your money on these. If you are one of those people that wants bits that can just hang around a tool box and be used for several years, don't waste money on these bits.
I will continue to use my old Dewalts. It just saddens me to see them become one of the "one time use" companies.
Thanks for reading.
