Breaks quickly, slow service
Received this unit approximately 2 months ago to use with my BioCube 32 gallon saltwater aquarium. My aquarium is in my office, so I wanted it to feed my fish over the weekend while I'm away. Product arrived as described with no damage to the box or internal components. Set-up was relatively straightforward and I had it feeding my fish once a day without problem. I did have some trouble metering out the correct dose of food. I use New Life Spectrum 1mm pellet food to feed two clownfish and a royal gramma. In order to prevent too much food from dumping, I had to close the sliding door down to the smallest possible opening, then taped half of the opening closed with scotch tape. It worked for about 2 months when I noticed that there were no characters on the display. I also couldn't get it to turn with the manual feed button. I thought it was just the cheap batteries that shipped with the unit, so I changed them out, but still nothing. I inspected the battery terminals; there was some rusty buildup on one which I was able to clean off. It still didn't work. I then looked closely at the circuit board which is visible when the battery cover is removed. I could see a bunch of build-up corrosion near one of the capacitors, I assume a result of evaporation from the tank affecting the electronics. I was able to blow some of this off with a can of air. This got the device to the point where faint numbers would flicker on the screen. The drum would also start rotating if the manual button was pressed, but it wouldn't stop. I called EHEIM given that the product has a 36 month guarantee. They said that they could service the unit, but that service or replacement would take 4-6 weeks. "What am I to do in the meantime?" I asked. "You're more than welcome to purchase a 'back-up' unit while you wait for service," they said. Could I buy one and have them refund the purchase...Nope. Well, I guess if I have two units, and they last around 2 months a piece, and servicing takes close to 2 months, I'll just be swapping back and forth with the service center. Don't you think they would somehow insulate the electronics from humidity in a product that is meant to hang on to the edge of a fish tank?
