This Author created a fictional account of what she felt it was like in 1619. I can't believe all the fuss made over a work of fiction. If the author knew anything about Jamestown, Va she would not have put indentured servants in the picture. As England sent all people black or white to Barbados or Jamaca as indentured servants first then after their servitude they would be sent to a county in Virginia to serve out the rest of their time. There were no British Armies in VA in 1619, no one was shot and killed, no Black servant knew English enough to write such a detailed and educated poem. Pure fiction People do your research on your own. The Portuguese brought black slaves to Florida where they traded for Indians for the Spanis. After a bit of time went by the Spanish . caught on to what was happening and decided to get their own slaves from Africa trading goods for African prisoners which eventually were sold around the coastand the US ,and the US. Timewise it was in the late 1500's. Owners of slaves stated " they were more trouble then they were worth" Scott Co., VA. Slaves were expensive, so they had to be well treated to keep them working. Men would run off whenever they had the chance, and an example would have to be made to keep these men from running again. It was not a pretty time in America but these African Slaves were sold all over the coastline to countries that would buy them. England stopped slavery before America did but they sent their slaves out of the country as indentured servants to learn a trade. Most of the freed black men in America could not find work so they robbed, stole and murdered people just to livr. Once caught they were put in prisons that were already overcrowded with blacks that the prisoners were hired out to work for very little money to pay off their debts. I have tried to shorten the accounting here from VA County books that gave written testimonies. These words were from historical books not fictional accounts made up by one person. America would still own slaves if it were not for Fredrick Douglas encouraging Abraham Lincoln to give the Civil War a purpose. The Civil War did not start out about Slavery but ended up being about slavery.
