★★☆☆☆
Not nearly as good as it could be
Pros:
* Low cost
* Looks high-tech
* Has PlasmaWave, a pro if you think PlasmaWave is a good thing
* Moves lots of air on high
Cons:
* Plastic smell in the output air for the first two minutes after being turned on. Could this be off-gassing from internal plastic parts?...in an air purifier?!?!?
* Carbon filter is carbon-impregnated fiber, not carbon pellets or granules. That's a very low surface area solution compared with more costly air purifiers. Building your own pellet-based filter would be a good improvement.
* PlasmaWave cannot be turned off. The PlasmaWave feature can produce an intermittent clicking sound as documented in the user manual. This sound is noticeable on low fan speeds if the purifier is within 4 feet. In my case, the purifier is close to me and when the clicking starts, the sound is annoying.
* The HEPA filter is thin compared more expensive purifiers (e.g., Rabbit Air, Sharp), and will saturate more quickly,
* No remote control. There is a plug pulling an opening on the top of the air purifier where the remote would fit. Contrary to an image shown in a customer photo for this product, a remote was NOT included with my purifier.
* The fit of the front panel at the bottom left and right corners is loose and sloppy. The panel does stay attached.
If you are set on buying a 5300, consider that for $30 more, you can get model WAC5500 from CostCo. The WAC5500 is the same as the 5300 except that the WAC5500 has a *washable* HEPA filter and has a remote control. In retrospect I would prefer that model.
