Long But Important Experience...
OK I've had it with Nylabone.
It seems their product main focus is the Dura Chew line (which I'll explain my problems) and Puppy Chews. Unless it's just a boring bone shape, generic, no taste Flexi bone you are forced to look into mostly Dura Chew. Where they put their ideas and funds and what seems to take up 80% of the Pet Store Chewies by them or even here on Amazon. Problem is, Dura Chew should be used rarely with specific chewers. Not be pushed in the way they are.
At this point my dog won't even mess with a Flexi Bone. Original or Chicken is all I can find except the occasional Bacon flavor which is her favorite. I have 10 packages of 3 bones, only 1 bacon flavored bone could be found.
When she got the last of her adult teeth in I asked my very wonderful vet if I could move up to Dura Chew. She warned me to BE CAREFUL. That they have had dogs come in with broken teeth, swallowed pieces too big to pass and other issues. She was not joking and I'm not at all surprised for the other reviewers who left horror stories.
First Dura Chew I bought my dog it arrived and was nothing more than the hardest PLASTIC and cheapest looking plastic ever. I could not believe it. Their commercialization and photos of it did not show the truth. That got sent right back to the store.
So finally I run across this product. It looked different than just a hunk of cheap plastic. And it was her favorite flavor. So I took a chance and bought it. It arrived and it really SEEMED to be much better. I felt it and thought for sure it wasn't simply horrible plastic under a little gummy. So I gave it to her. She was having a blast with it at first. Her favorite flavor is a different shape for once? YES!
Unlike the other chews she was shaking her head to get the pieces that she was pulling off out of her mouth. She wouldn't swallow them like the Flexi Chew's tiny pieces. I later felt the carpet and could feel the grains that were very hard. Her actions should have been a red flag, I should have just taken it away then but I let her enjoy her twig (that's what I call it).
Then one evening I give her the Twig and she's enjoying herself. Out of the blue my husband and I are startled by my poor dog who SCREECHED, then cried all of the way across the living room to me. I went to check her mouth. That stupid, stupid Dura Chew! It does NOT break up properly. At every point she had chewed, it had made SHARDS. So sharp that it pulls up the carpet and fur was stuck wound into the really sharp parts. What you see was after my battle to get most of it out. Apparently one of the many of sharp points had stabbed her in the gums so bad it tore her gums since she jerked her head away. Not only do I feel horrible for giving her this thing but I am ticked! And a vet bill added to the cost now.
The vet looked at the "Twig of Expense" (my new name for it) and shook her head. I felt so bad and stupid. My poor pup got soft food instructions, an antibiotic shot and a little pain meds. She reaffirmed this is not an issue of buying the wrong chew for how aggressively she chews. She is a dog who falls right into their "Dura Chew" line instruction.
And for those reading this and never had a problem, that's out of sheer luck. And if you are not always around when your dog is chewing it's possible your dog did get hurt. Be careful, please.
So, to the one taking up most of the space in the pet chew line, Central Garden & Pet Company (owners of Nylabone) who claims "Safe, Healthy Chewing Since 1955(tm)". I do not trust you. You used to have nice spot in my arsenal of items to keep my very busy girl busy but I will no longer risk any of my dogs or any others health. And I am ticked that my dog's mouth is injured. I couldn't even get her to allow me to lift her cheeks long enough to take a photo. Not going to hurt her more becuase of you.
Maybe at one point you were a safe company. You certainly veered off course however and are injuring our pets. Just read the reviews in not just this but other pages. WE put our trust in your claims but all you did is push the Dura Chew lines which are dangerous.
In the end, I'm done. You Nylabone "Safe, Healthy Chewing Since 1955(tm)"? Shame on you.
